History of Eaglehawk Citizens Brass Band

Our Story

The Eaglehawk Citizens’ Brass Band was originally formed as the Eaglehawk Borough Band in October 1884. The Borough of Eaglehawk boomed in the 1850’s as gold fever took over the region in and around Bendigo, and has been a tight knit, supportive community ever since.

In its 139-year history the band spent many years as an A Grade band, due in large part to its Marching prowess. During the 1990’s the Eaglehawk Citizens’ band were undefeated at an Australian  National Championship level for the Diagram March component of the annual competition. In recent times The Eaglehawk Citizens’ Brass Band has travelled to many contests across the country, with State and National Championship Title wins to its name. The band has travelled to Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne to compete at a National level with numerous wins and placings, both performing on stage and marching.

The band is proud of its history and has counted many distinguished and distinctive people amongst its members during this time and hopes to continue playing amongst the Eaglehawk community for many years to come.

Community service has always been the highest priority for the band with regular appearances at local functions such as Australia Day, Anzac Day, Christmas Carols, School Fetes, Easter, Dahlia and Arts Festival, charitable functions etc keeping the band very busy throughout the year.

Members of the band enjoy playing music that entertains their audience. From traditional marches to popular tunes by Artists such as Bruno Mars, as well as music from films and jazz/swing numbers. The band also performs sacred works for ecumenical services and demanding Major-works for contests that requires teamwork from all of its members to create the best performance they can.

The band has always been committed to fostering budding musicians and have re-started the training program recently. In any organisation we are always on the lookout for the next generations to come along and continue the legacy. How lucky are brass bands that there is never an upper age limit to playing music! Our youngest current member, Mia, at 11 has a long future ahead of her to catch 99-year-old Pierce Grenfell.

And just think…. age, race, gender, religion or any other qualifier that cause impediments in almost all parts of general life – just do not occur in Brass Bands. Regardless of who we are we can come in, sit down, and play your part as an equally valid part of this ensemble. The only pre-requisite for membership of this band, is the want to be a contributing part of this band.

Throughout their history the Eaglehawk band have been known to travel far and wide, playing and marching, as well as always supporting and entertaining their community, sharing their enjoyment of music with all.

Today is no different, although the personnel have changed, the leadership has evolved, the ethos will always remain. Community, through Music.
